Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Gabinetto della Grafica

The Gabinetto della grafica counts circa 150,000 prints and drawings. Furthermore, it also hosts a collection of matrices. The collection has been divided into five parts: Fondo Stampe, Fondo Stampe Geografiche, Fondo Matrici, Fondo Disegni, and Raccolta fotografica. In addition to that, there are two autonomous substantial fondi: the Ashby Collection and the Gismondi Collection. The first testimony of a collection of prints in the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana is dated back to 1773. At that date, the prints were circa 30,000. Pope Pius VI (1717-1799) first actively collaborated to the formation of the actual collection.
